Ams releases New 1mm Low Power Micro Camera Module-NanEyeM

Ams AG, the world's leading provider of high-performance sensor solutions, recently announced the pre-release of the NanEyeM, a miniature integrated Micro Camera Module (MCM) assembly with a tiny footprint at the image sensor end of just 1mm2.

The NanEyeM has a compact design with a simple interface that is easy to integrate into industrial and consumer electronics applications where space is limited.It provides new embedded vision capabilities for products such as smart toys and home appliances.

NanEyeM offers a 100k pixel high resolution 10-bit digital image in single-ended interface mode (SEIM). Like the standard Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), the SEIM channel is easy to use in any host processor, eliminating the need for LVDS deserialization and providing a cost-optimized solution. Maximum frame rate supported by the SEIM interface: The frame rate is 58 fps at 75 MHz clock.

NanEyeM uses a custom multi-element lens that significantly increases the effective resolution of the sensor and reduces distortion compared to competing sensors for single-element lenses. The MTF (modulation transfer function) of the four corners is >50%, the distortion rate is <15%, and the color difference is <1Px.

The SEIM slave configuration supports the use of the host application processor to control the frame rate down to 1fps or lower. Synchronization of two or more cameras can be easily accomplished by providing a clock in the application processor, which is useful in applications such as human eye tracking or stereo vision.

NanEyeM also offers a redundancy mode that reduces application power consumption (such as occupancy monitoring), which requires only a very low frame rate.

Amers Semiconductor will provide reference designs for image acquisition and image processing based on the ARM® core standard processor to reduce customer development time and speed time to market.

Tom Walschap, director of marketing for Amex Semiconductor's CMOS image sensor business unit, said: "Some designers want to add high-resolution video capabilities to a space-constrained architecture, but so far have been limited by the size of industrial image sensors on the market. The introduction of NanEyeM opens up new possibilities for adding camera functionality in the smallest of space. The product's easy-to-use digital output module allows designers to add camera functionality quickly and easily."

The NanEyeM image sensor will be available for sampling in Q2 2019.
